    a note from the artist:

“Hello, my name is Phillip Leonard, a local artist in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I was born in the steel mill town of Granite City, Illinois, the third of eight children. We relocated to Fayetteville in 1962.

I attended the University of Arkansas and University of Oklahoma in accounting and business management. I worked at Washington Regional Medical Center.

My family has supported and been the impetus of my renewed interest in art. I have rededicated myself toward learning more about the media of oils and watercolor.

    My works are all originals.

My Jan/Feb show at Zephyr Blevins Gallery in Rogers will be partly a racing theme in oil and watercolor along with still lifes and landscapes.”

    One Candle

    One Candle

I refer to this body of work as my “Candle Series”. Initially I began painting candles because I was fascinated by their quality of intense and changing warm light. As I continued to paint them, I asked myself why this subject matter was becoming a theme for me. I grew up with a mother who refused to use any over-head or fluorescent lights in our home.  I am not sure I could count how many candles fill her house. I can remember staring at flickering flames and being mesmerized.  Having this in mind, these paintings began to move away from being strictly representational to a more ambiguous focus of light sources relating to one another since this atmosphere was what I found so intriguing.

Painters like Georges de la Tour and Caravaggio were a couple of my first influences for this series. I have always been attracted to how they both employ a strong light source to describe the rest of the painting. Gerhard Richter’s candle series is another resource for me, although he handles the subject matter much differently than I have. Finally, paintings Laura Harris have recently begun to affect my work because of their ambiguity and bold palette.

Currently I am a senior at the University of Arkansas. I will graduate in May of 2009 with a Bachelors of Fine Art. I started this series my sophomore year of college. All were completed outside of classes and assignments, giving me the freedom to simply paint. The series may have more personal significance versus a conceptual one. Nonetheless, they feel like home to me.
