Master of Fine Arts candidate, Kelsey Felthousen, will be utilizing the Fine Arts Center Gallery as a “survelliance site” for her thesis exhibition, myspace, from March 24 - April 4. Felthousen will construct an inverted home in the Union Mall of the University of Arkansas campus, in which she will live during this time period. myspace1.jpgGallery visitors will have the opportunity to sit and watch the artist in her “home” via an internet connection and large screen television, set up in the gallery for viewing. The irony of this situation is that the “viewer/voyeur” can also be watched, since the gallery is fronted with glass windows and doors.

Felthousen explains her thesis concept, as “(dealing) with the notions of an overexposed, vulnerable society that…feels unprotected. When creating this work I chose to broach the subject of sacred/private space and how that space is being given away freely, without thought of the consequences.”

“Sacred Space, as defined in this exhibition, is the preciousness of close relationships and the privacy within our lives and homes. One need not search far for evidence of this exposure. It can be seen in all aspects of our society, from television programming to technology.”

Construction on the outdoor installation piece began on March 14, with a house-warming held on Friday, March 21. A reception for the artist will be held on Friday, March 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery and on the Union Mall.

To view the site online, go to http://www.uark.edu/home/11136.php

A reception for the artist will be held on Friday, March 28 from 5 - 7 pm in the gallery.

  • remy fine art is very honored to be featuring a solo exhibition of recent works by Kevin Arnold. The exhibit, “Eventide” will open with a reception for the artist on April 3rd, from 6:00pm-8:00pm. The exhibit will be on view from April 3rd-April 30th, gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday from noon-5pm.

Arnold, a BFA from the University of Arkansas, is widely regarded as one of the finest emerging artists from our region. The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith recently acquired one of Arnold’s paintings for their permanent collection exhibited in the newly dedicated Mary Tinnin Jaye Gallery. The painting, “In the Meantime” hangs alongside the work of Arthur Dove and John Marin.

Think of Kevin Arnold as our own Edward Hopper. He captures the rural heart, painting life with the parts Norman Rockwell left out: brooding loneliness, momentary thought and the silence that is left in the day after all the hard work is done. These are narrative paintings that do what the best art does: imply meaning that is greater than the explicit message of the work itself. This mystery is what will hold the viewer and cause one to return again and again to Arnold’s paintings in an attempt to gain understanding.

remy fine art is located at 720 Garrison, Fort Smith, AR. For additional information please visit www.remyfineart.com
