Poor Richard’s Art, 116 S. First St. in historic downtown Rogers, is proud to announce the artists of the month for September. Basket maker Margaret Alter and painter Dotti Fick will be showing off their works during the month, with a reception September 18th.

Margaret Alter began weaving baskets in 1994 after moving to Bella Vista from Kansas City, Mo. She is a member of the Arkansas Basket Guild and the Missouri Basket Guild. Her craft has been learned at seminars and workshops from several nationally known instructors.

Her baskets have received much recognition including the Best of Show Award in Creative Crafts and several Best Basket Awards at Benton County Fairs. The baskets are shaped by hand as she weaves rather than woven over a form. They are made without glue, tacks or staples. Margaret dyes her own reed and often incorporates finished oak bases individually crafted by her husband, George who often refers to her as "a basket case".

The Tapestry Basket, a free-form basket woven from natural and textile fibers along with the Antler Basket, a free-form basket incorporating a deer antler are favorites to weave. Totes, Picnic Baskets and Quilter’s Baskets are some of the more popular baskets sold at Poor Richards Art.

Dotti Fick has studied art most of her life. When she first could use a pencil she was drawing portraits of her family. Somewhere between the ages of 11 & 13 she started working in oils. She has studied different mediums of art both in college and in private classes. Dotti has studied painting at the Art Museum in Rochester, MN; drawing and painting at the Vista Community College in Vista, CA; commercial graphic arts at Drury College in Springfield, MO; and sculpture, drawing, CAD, and painting at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, MO and she also has a Certificate of Proficiency from the American School of Art.

Dotti has combined the two mediums of calligraphy and drawing for her recent art work series that use vegetables and fruit in word forms. With these two series, Dotti hopes to help people who wish to change their eating habits into the best eating lifestyle they can create for themselves as an individual. She has created her works with wit, humor, knowledge of the health that certain fruits and veggies can give us that is well executed through she drawing ability.

Dotti Fick has lived on Beaver Lake for many years. She has been privileged to be a member of Poor Richard’s Art since it’s inception well over two years ago.

Please join Poor Richard’s in celebrating the wonderful work of these artists, in conjunction with the Third Friday Twilight Walk in Rogers Historic District, September 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Poor Richard’s Art is a cooperative art gallery dedicated to nurture and present innovative art of uncommon quality in all types of media by regional artists, while preserving the Old Applegate Drug Store building. Hours are 10:00 to 6:00 Monday through Saturday.
