The University of Arkansas, Fulbright College Department of Music will feature the University of Arkansas Saxophone Chamber Ensemble and Saxophone Quartet in concert on Thursday evening, April 17, 2008 at 7:00 PM.  The ensembles will be performing musical selections from the music of J. S. Bach, Frescobaldi, Hartley, Mozart, Schubert, Praetorius, Krell, Debussy and Frackenpohl.  The University of Arkansas Saxophone Chamber Ensemble was organized in 1992 by the university’s resident saxophonist, Stan Morris.  The ensemble, comprised of saxophone students who are currently studying saxophone at the University of Arkansas, varies in size from a compliment of six to eleven instrumentalists.  However, the instrumentation remains constant: soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass saxophone.

Adolphe Sax, the saxophones inventor, envisioned the saxophone as a noble and expressive instrument. The University of Arkansas Saxophone Chamber Ensemble recreates this vision in their musical presentations of both original and transcribed works for the saxophone ensemble. Because the homogenous sound of the ensemble is closely related to that produced by the string orchestra, the saxophone ensemble has been the impetus for numerous composes to write original works for this instrumentation.  Since its founding, the group has had the opportunity of sharing the joy of this music with hundreds of elementary, junior and senior high school students throughout the region.  Guest appearances by the ensemble have been given at the Arkansas All-State Convention, the Four-States Bandmaster’s Convention, and the North American Saxophone Alliance Region IV Conference.

The concert will be held in the Stella Smith Boyle Concert Hall (FNAR 140) located in the Fine Arts Building on the campus of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.  Free parking is available in the parking deck which can be accessed from Stadium Drive and is located directly to the west of the Fine Arts Building.  The admission is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.  For more information please call the University of Arkansas, Department of Music at (479) 575-4701.
