The new Fayetteville Arts Council, which has met only once, is already involved in the possibility of public art on College Avenue and has some questions about its bylaws and authority.

“ The thing about the Arts Council is that it’s so broad and there’s so many things that it should be doing, that it’s just a matter of narrowing down and then figuring out what your priorities are, so that’s what we’re doing, ” said Kathy Thompson, vice chairman. “ We’re thinking to the future and what it was that we wanted to focus on and how to start. ” Read more…

  • ROGERS, ARKANSAS (July 20th 2007 – August 31st 2007) – The Art Gallery at Julie Wait Designs will present new work by regional artist, Linda Dian Stair, from July 20th 2007 – August 31st 2007. The public is invited to the opening night reception during 3rd Friday Twilight Walk in Historic Downtown Rogers on Friday July 20th 2007 between 4:00pm and 8:00pm.  The 3rd Friday Twilight Walk in Historic Downtown Rogers is an art and entertainment event that debuts this month and occurs each 3rd Friday, July thru October from 4:00pm until 8:00pm.  Linda Dian Stair will greet guests in the gallery during this event on Friday, July 20th, 2007.

Linda’s favorite medium is soft pastel because it is so adaptable to painting and drawing.  Stair enjoys experimenting with the various surfaces for pastel.  She interprets nature with emotional content in her work.

Linda Dian Stair states “After a career in Pharmaceutical sales and the children grown I followed my lifelong dream and enrolled in the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. There I fell in love with the work of the Impressionists and pursued the influence. Workshops with Wm. Schultz, who had studied with Wm. Brackman, continued this method. A trip to France to study and follow the footsteps of the Impressionists was a great experience.”

The Julie Wait Designs Art Gallery at 318 S. First Street in Historic Downtown Rogers is open to the public 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday – Friday and by appointment.  For information call 479.631.8706.

  • FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas—July 10, 2007—The New Design Center located at 572 West 6th St., is offering a Digital Storytelling Makeshop (hands-on workshop) July 24 – 26, 2007, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Cost is $395 for the 3-day program. Proceeds benefit technology needs of the New Design Center.

The makeshop, taught by University of Arkansas Department of Art Assistant Professor Tom Hapgood, will instruct attendees in creating a digital, personal narrative that can be shown on DVD or posted to the Web. Space will be limited to six attendees, so anyone with some computer experience interested is encouraged to sign up soon.

“Storytelling is such a big part of how we understand the world,” says Hapgood. “Everyone has a story based on a poignant memory or experience, and sharing such personal stories can really bring individuals or groups of people together. I think it’s especially important in Northwest Arkansas right now as the area expands and embraces many cultures.”

The makeshop attendees will utilize modern, easy-to-use software in constructing their digital stories, including scanning of photographs and documents, digitizing video files, writing and recording a voiceover script, using music and editing it all together.

The makeshop attendees are asked to bring the artifacts that will be incorporated into their story, including photos, videos (VHS, mini-DV only) and documents to the first session on July 24th. Attendees are also welcome (encouraged!) to E-mail Tom with any questions before the makeshop.

The New Design Center, located in the Mill District in Fayetteville, is a nonprofit dedicated to offering creativity and technology development to the community. For further information regarding makeshops and New Design Center, visit www.newdesigncenter.org.
