Ask Congress to support the Artist Deduction Bill. If passed, this bill will allow creators who donate works of art to receive the same tax benefits as collectors who donate. As it is now, creators can only claim cost of materials. Collectors who donate can claim fair-market value deduction.

Artists are often asked to donate works of art for fundraising. People asking artists to do this often do not realize that the artist is unable to claim the full value of the artwork as a deduction. Take the opportunity to educate people about this. Many organizations are now asking patrons and collectors of art to purchase a piece from an artist and then donate the piece to the fundraiser. This benefits all three parties involved – the artist makes income, the donor receives a tax deduction and the organization receives a donation.
