ACTION ALERT
ORDINANCE REVIEW COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS FAYETTEVILLE ARTS COMMISSION
AND RELATED ORDINANCES
FAYETTEVILLE, AR – January 15, 2007 – The City Council’s Ordinance Review Committee will discuss a resolution to form a Fayetteville Arts Commission at 5:00 PM on Thursday, January 18, in City Administration Room 111. The committee will also discuss policies to accept donated public art, monuments, memorials and plaques.
Thursday’s meeting will most likely be the last for the Ordinance Review Committee to discuss the resolution and policies before sending them on to the full City Council. The current resolution designates the seven-member Fayetteville Arts Commission to be comprised of:
1. One member of the Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Board;
2. One member of the Walton Arts Center;
3. One member of the City Council; and
4. Four at-large community members, two of which must be working artists.
The commissioners will have three-year term limits. The first set of commissioners will be separated into three groups accordingly:
1. Two commissioners with one-year terms;
2. Two commissioners with two-year terms; and
3. Three commissioners with three-year terms.

The Public Art Donation Policy affects any public art to be placed on public property, including City property, parks and rights-of-way. The policy applies to only donated art and provides guidelines and procedures governing the acquisition, display, maintenance, potential deaccessiong and lending of public art for public display. City Planning felt that monuments, memorials and plaques should have a separate policy from public art. Although the policies are similar in nature, they are very unique to their own goals. This policy outlines in detail the criteria for justifying the monument as well as the full approval process. Click here to view the monuments, memorials and plaques policy.
