Sculptor Hank Kaminsky’s work already graces the Fayetteville square. Commissioned in 2000 for installation at the new Fayetteville Town Center, the 10-foot bronze globe took a team of 20 sculptors a combined 8,000 hours to create. After molds were taken, 42 bronze segments were poured in Kaminsky’s foundry and assembled into the 4-ton artwork, which says on its face “May peace prevail on earth” in more than 100 languages.

Kaminsky is returning to the mainstage of public art this summer, displaying five of his large bronze and steel sculptures at five sites downtown. Receptions at each site open the “gallery without walls” experience at 6:30 p.m. today.

The works will be installed at the Town Center, the Arvest Plaza on the square, the West Avenue Garden of the Walton Arts Center, the Meditation Garden of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and in the front entry of the Fayetteville Public Library until the end of the Fayetteville Arts Festival, which will be Sept. 1-9.

Kaminsky says the sculptures are all part of a series of works Kaminsky calls “Pages From the Book of the Earth,” an exhibition that has been shown at the Shidoni Gallery in Santa Fe for the past year. Each of the sculptures is related to the World Peace Prayer Fountain.

Rita Blitt Guest At Art Party
Kaminsky isn’t the only artist turning Northwest Arkansas into an outdoor gallery.

Currently on display outside the Walton Arts Center — as well as in the Joy Pratt Markham Gallery and the Cynthia H. Coughlin Gallery — is “Passionate Gestures: Painting and Sculpture by Rita Blitt,” featuring sculptures “formed by sweeping curves and undulating lines … in three-dimensional space,” says Michele McGuire, curator of visual arts at WAC. “The peaceful yet lively nature of her art radiates with joie de vive.

Art patrons are invited to meet Blitt, internationally recognized as a painter, sculptor and filmmaker, at an Art Party from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the arts center. The informal event includes live music from the Claudia Burson Trio, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Admission to the Art Party and the exhibition is free.

Bentonville Square Gallery for a Day
In Bentonville, artists will strut their stuff indoors at the annual Spring Art Walk, set for 4-9 p.m. Monday on the square. Businesses become galleries for the evening, as more than 40 artists showcase original works in pastel, watercolor, clay, metal, oil, acrylic, mixed media, fiber, glass, ceramic, beadwork and more.

Children and adults can get into the act themselves by adding strokes to a “public art canvas” for a $1 donation.

New Art Honors Friend of Library
In Rogers, tributes to the Rebecca Trammel, late wife of Dick Trammel and former president of the Rogers Public Library Foundation, are funding a new outdoor feature at the Rogers Public Library. Artist Xi Krump of Studio Xi and collaborator Sara Ford started work June 9 on Rebecca’s Garden.

The three-dimensional garden mural will grace the preschool and toddler area, and once it is completed in late June, a free-standing reading arbor will be added, along with a large working clock that will be incorporated into the overall design of the room.

Books, puzzles and games about time and nature purchased in memory of Rebecca Trammel will also be added. Completion of the project is expected by late July.
